Road Trip – Its All About the Details

All photos taken on September 25, 2021 during our Pyramid Overlook hike.

PART 1 – Bunchberry Beauty

Holy crap. How had we missed these plants on this hike before? Here, we have been hiking Bunchberry Meadows for almost a year and thinking Bunchberries were a rare plant. They were here, all along our mountain hike and they were every shade of fall.

Right before our eyes

yet we’d not seen them before.

Bunchberry beauty.

PART 2 – ‘Shrooms

A cool wet fall resulted in the proliferation of a variety of mushrooms along our path. Here are the ones that caught my eye. Some of my travelling companions thought these shots were gross. What do you think?

PART 3 – PLEASE DROP IN ANYTIME

While the rain never really affected our hike, it came and went along the way, leaving drops on leaves and twigs and stippling the surface of Pyramid Lake near the end of our hike. The glint of light on the droplets and the pattern on the lake surface caught my eye. Here are the results.

PART 4 – Fall-iage

There were still a lot of pops of colour around on the forest floor. These included leaves, flowers, moss and berries. The juniper berries varied from bright to dusty blue, but they all had that great juniper smell when they were squeezed.

PART 5 – Time to Reflect

By the time we reached the last part of the hike along Pyramid Lake, rain was starting to dimple the surface of the lake. The reflections were muted like those in a Monet watercolour.

Not much to tell. After working for 3 companies over 43+ years (38 years 7 months with my last company), I finally got that promotion I had waited my entire career for……retirement. I have been exploring this new career for the past 7+ years and while it is not always exciting, the chance to do what I want for myself and my family instead of what my company wants has been very fulfilling. Early on, there was a long list of projects in my “to-do” hopper and I attacked these projects with a vengeance for the first 9 months of retirement. Eventually, my brain told me that this was not what retirement was about, so it took me another 5 months before my industriousness again took over and I attacked another line of projects, this time somewhat shorter and less complicated, as well as many new projects related to the family weddings in 2016. After going hard for 6 weeks and 3 weddings, my body was telling me to relax, then the flu bug hit and as soon as that was done with me, my sciatic acted up. No rest for the wicked. In 2020 and 2021, the Covid 19 pandemic changed the whole retirement gig. I was lucky to not be still working, for sure. I enjoy photography, gardening, working with my hands, walking, cycling, skiing, travelling, reading and creating special photo and video productions obtained in my first pastime. I may never become wealthy in any of these pursuits, but I already feel I am rich in life experiences far beyond any expectation.

  1. Isn’t it amazing how we can see so many different things each time we visit the same location depending on time of day, time of year, etc? The world really is remarkable.
Rain. It’s an exquisite thing that we take for granted all too often. You captured the beauty of those drops magnificently.

    1. Thanks Angie. You often do not see the big picture without looking at all the tiny details. Yes, I love rain and snow for photographs. The drops and flakes provide a lot of texture. Thanks for reading. Allan

  2. At our home in California, we have a sign that says, “I must be a mushroom. Everyone keeps me in the dark and feeds me bullshit!” I thought of that when I saw your mushrooms!

    1. As I found out, they are apparently everywhere. It was great to see them turn for fall. The drizzle did not bother us much and created some interesting photos. The forest smells were heavenly. Thanks for reading Linda. Allan

    1. The variety of mushrooms is amazing. Some are such beautiful creations. Others just look like a pile of poop. While we were not happy about the rainy day, it made for some phenomenal photo ops, so no real complaints here. Thanks for reading Bernie. Allan
