Road Trip – Benji, the Wonder Dog Tour

All photos taken on October 3, 2021, during our walk through Lost Lagoon, Stanley Park and along the Seawall to Sunset Beach in Vancouver’s West End.

Benji: Hi! My name is Benji, the Wonder Dog, but you can just call me Benji. Today, I’m going to take you on a walking tour of some of the most scenic locations in Vancouver’s West End. Now, you will have to do your best to keep up, as I will not slow down for any stragglers or lolligaggers. B has put the leash on me, thinking he is controlling the tour. You should know that I LET him think that, but it is in fact not the truth. Sidebar…I stop for squirrel chasing, goose bossing, sudden bark alerts and aimless wandering on the beach. That is my right as tour guide. Deal with it!

Allan: While the dialogue above may seem silly, one has to wonder what goes through a dog’s mind as he is walking. I am not certain if Benji or B walks faster. All I know is that us old folk had a tough time keeping up with the pace, but we did not dare become stragglers or lolligaggers.

Benji: Leaving the West end, we pass by the historic Sylvia Hotel, with a glimpse of English Bay, the Blue Heron nesting area and my friend the black squirrel, whom I have agreed not to chase, just on this one occasion.

Benji: I am not sure why they call it Lost Lagoon. I found it easily, so how can it be Lost???

Does anyone have any questions? No? Good!! You should know, there will be a test later and by the way, I work for tips. Kibble will do just fine.
Please watch out for my friend Ooey Gooey, the Wooly Bear. Do not step on him.

Benji: Now, try to keep up here folks. We are entering Stanley Park, one of my favourite places in the West End, at least until the coyotes moved in. I tolerated the squirrels and the raccoons, but, those darn coyotes just had to go and spoil it all for everyone.

Benji: Bear with me. I just have to go for a frolic on the beach. You can take in the beautiful scenery or frolic with me, as you like. Our stop here may be short….or it may be long. It all depends on what I find to entertain myself. But, do pay attention. When I leave, I leave, I do not look back to see if you are all following.

Benji: Folks, we are now on the home stretch along Sunset Beach, on English Bay. Our tour will be coming to an end shortly, so please enjoy these final views and get my tip ready.

Allan: While we were worn out, Benji, the Wonder Dog was not. He just went on and on about the benefits of living in the West End. as he took in the afternoon sunshine.

Not much to tell. After working for 3 companies over 43+ years (38 years 7 months with my last company), I finally got that promotion I had waited my entire career for……retirement. I have been exploring this new career for the past 7+ years and while it is not always exciting, the chance to do what I want for myself and my family instead of what my company wants has been very fulfilling. Early on, there was a long list of projects in my “to-do” hopper and I attacked these projects with a vengeance for the first 9 months of retirement. Eventually, my brain told me that this was not what retirement was about, so it took me another 5 months before my industriousness again took over and I attacked another line of projects, this time somewhat shorter and less complicated, as well as many new projects related to the family weddings in 2016. After going hard for 6 weeks and 3 weddings, my body was telling me to relax, then the flu bug hit and as soon as that was done with me, my sciatic acted up. No rest for the wicked. In 2020 and 2021, the Covid 19 pandemic changed the whole retirement gig. I was lucky to not be still working, for sure. I enjoy photography, gardening, working with my hands, walking, cycling, skiing, travelling, reading and creating special photo and video productions obtained in my first pastime. I may never become wealthy in any of these pursuits, but I already feel I am rich in life experiences far beyond any expectation.

    1. Thanks Linda. I had fun with that post. Benji deserved to have a byline. Turns out that some coyotes were being fed by humans which made the situation worse. A perfect example of why parks tell you nott o feed the wildlife I guess. Glad we never saw any coyotes on our walk. Thanks for reading. Allan
