Rough Road

Another week, another walk. Again, we chose what we thought would be the perfect day, sunshine, low winds and a temperature that would start around 0C when we started our walk and be up to +4C by the end. What we did not plan for was the rumply, bumply frozen trail surface, due to the previous days at +13C and +8C.

Not much to tell. After working for 3 companies over 43+ years (38 years 7 months with my last company), I finally got that promotion I had waited my entire career for……retirement. I have been exploring this new career for the past 7+ years and while it is not always exciting, the chance to do what I want for myself and my family instead of what my company wants has been very fulfilling. Early on, there was a long list of projects in my “to-do” hopper and I attacked these projects with a vengeance for the first 9 months of retirement. Eventually, my brain told me that this was not what retirement was about, so it took me another 5 months before my industriousness again took over and I attacked another line of projects, this time somewhat shorter and less complicated, as well as many new projects related to the family weddings in 2016. After going hard for 6 weeks and 3 weddings, my body was telling me to relax, then the flu bug hit and as soon as that was done with me, my sciatic acted up. No rest for the wicked. In 2020 and 2021, the Covid 19 pandemic changed the whole retirement gig. I was lucky to not be still working, for sure. I enjoy photography, gardening, working with my hands, walking, cycling, skiing, travelling, reading and creating special photo and video productions obtained in my first pastime. I may never become wealthy in any of these pursuits, but I already feel I am rich in life experiences far beyond any expectation.

    1. I am interested to see how the new leaves in the forest and my yard will fare after the recent snow and cold weather. Hopefully the spring is kinder to the blossoms this year and they stick around for a while. Thanks for reading and commenting Lynette. Happy Saturday. Allan

  1. Your opening shot of the sun dancing its way through the thicket is a cracker. A pity you missed the deer this time but this is somewhat compensated by the wonderful rose bushes. I also love how those magnificent brown leaves are frosted around the edges. I am trying to picture what an awful ordeal that would’ve been for the animal to tear itself loose. The wolf print meanwhile was a fantastic find and capture! Glad your paths didn’t meet in real time. The chickadees are delightful, rather one of them on my hand than a raven.

    1. Wow. You really read this full post Leighton. Good on you. Imagine the deer phoning his boss at work. Sorry boss, I just can’t rip myself outta bed. We have seen a lot of wolf prints lately. Maybe we should be more careful. Good thing we carry bear spray and our creaking bones make so much noise, they can hear us a mile away. The chickadees fee really tickle your hand when the land. I had one land on my head once and also on the tip of my hiking pole. They are really curious about us humans. Thanks for reading Leighton and have a good Sunday. Allan

  2. I love the shots of the frost/ice on the leaves and branches. It’s tough when it’s icy, glad there were no casualties. That chickadee sure is cute, that’s pretty cool you got it to land. I do not miss the snow or cold.

    1. It was still safe to walk without our spikes, but as the days warmed, this would change. When you are walking in a monochrome landscape, its the little things that stick out. Those black capped chickadees are so curious and friendly, they will land on your open hand…once. If there is no food, they move on. Patty has the touch. Thanks for reading and commenting Lyssy. Happy Earth Day. Allan
